Mesh Versus Tape
Drywall tape and mesh are not self-sticking, which means that the joint compound is what adheres to the wall.
Fiberglass drywall mesh is strong and flexible, while paper tape’s rigidity creates very strong joints. It’s usually a matter of preference, but in some cases, one will be better than the other.
Depending on the project, we may select a drywall mesh rather than tape, or your team may decide to use a combination of paper tape and fiberglass mesh to tape your drywall.

Our Drywall taping Process
Our steps are probably the same ones that other drywall installers use.
- Apply a thick layer of joint compound into the “trough” area between two pieces of drywall. At its thickest, the compound should be about 1”.
- Press the tape into the compound, pressing it in every foot or so to insure that the non-adhesive tape sticks to the seam.
- Smooth the tape so that the joints between the sheets of drywall are invisible. None of the tape’s edges should be sticking up.
- Wait for the compound to dry. It usually takes about 24 hours for joint compound to dry.
- Apply a second coat of joint compound. Allow to dry again and apply a third coat. Steps 1-5 will take 3-4 days, depending on humidity and the speed with which your drywall contractor can apply the compound.
- Sand the seams until they are smooth. This is done with sandpaper or sanding mesh.
- Clean the walls by removing the dust that was created during sanding.By following these steps faithfully, Chicago Drywall Contractors can ensure the best possible results each and every time!

Pro Tips
After so many years installing drywall for our beloved Chicago customers, we’ve learned a thing or two! And we don’t mind sharing that information with you:
It isn’t always necessary to tape drywall for repairs, but every new build will require drywall taping. Chicago Drywall Contractors can advise you on the best course of action to make your repairs, renovations, and new constructions go perfectly!
- Install drywall sheets close together so there aren’t huge gaps. This technique uses less compound, and there’s less room for error.
- Start in the middle of the room and work your way to the corners so the tape doesn’t come loose.
- Use larger sheets of drywall so there will be fewer seams. We use standard-sized 4x8 sheets in smaller rooms, but in larger rooms, we like to use 4x10 or even 4x12 drywall to reduce the number of seams.
