Any of the following things can cause a drywall issue:
- Water leak – Drywall does not hold up to excessive moisture. A water leak in your roof or interior plumbing can be detrimental to your walls.
- Severe storms – If you’re unfortunate enough to have your home damaged by a storm, there can be thousands of dollars of damage to the interior and exterior of your home, including drywall.
- Fires – Fire and smoke damage are impossible to remove with a coat of paint. You’ll need to replace the damaged drywall to get rid of the smoke smell.
- Mold – Mold can grow in nearly any condition. If you have had any water damage in your home, be watchful of any signs of mold or mildew growth. If you see any, call us to replace it immediately.
- Falling through – The funny scene you’ve seen on television definitely happens in real life! In fact, it happens more than you’d think. Falling through the ceiling or through a wall can cause major damage that needs to be repaired by a pro.
Repair Types
Drywall repair can be done for any size hole in your wall.
Dents and scrapes
Small imperfections can be camouflaged with plaster or sheetrock mud.
Small holes
A hole that is a couple of inches wide can be repaired easily with drywall mesh and 1-2 layers of drywall mud, the second applied after the first has cured for 24 hours.
Medium holes
A hole that is roughly 6 inches wide should be patched with a small piece of drywall, scored on one side so that one piece of the paper hangs over the edges. Measurements need to be exact for the patch to work correctly, so a professional can save you a lot of trouble by doing it right the first time.
Large damaged sections
If the damaged section is larger than 6 inches wide, a different approach is required. We’ll need to cut a section out of the wall, careful to avoid plumbing and electrical wires, and then we will attach a piece of drywall to the studs and fill in the edges around the patch the way we would if we were hanging new drywall.

Pro Tips
After so many years installing drywall for our beloved Chicago customers, we’ve learned a thing or two! And we don’t mind sharing that information with you:
It isn’t always necessary to tape drywall for repairs, but every new build will require drywall taping. Chicago Drywall Contractors can advise you on the best course of action to make your repairs, renovations, and new constructions go perfectly!
- Install drywall sheets close together so there aren’t huge gaps. This technique uses less compound, and there’s less room for error.
- Start in the middle of the room and work your way to the corners so the tape doesn’t come loose.
- Use larger sheets of drywall so there will be fewer seams. We use standard-sized 4x8 sheets in smaller rooms, but in larger rooms, we like to use 4x10 or even 4x12 drywall to reduce the number of seams.
